Cabo San Lucas is one of the most popular destinations for vacationers in the world. If you go through the Cabo history, you will come to know that it was not so popular amongst tourists rather it was a safe haven for sea pirates. But over the years, Mexican government has put a lot of effort to make this spot more attractive. This small town is located at the southern most tip of Baja California peninsula. Los Cabos international airport is about 22 miles away from this quiet Mexican resort.
Cabo History
Cabo was discovered by a Spaniard, Herman Cortez in 1573. His original name was Santa Cruz. In 1596 that name was changed to La Paz by Sebastian Vizcaino. Many sea explorers and sailors were attracted to this place in search of gold and pearls. Very soon the town became a hub for trade between the Philippines to Acapulco, Mexico to Spain for silk, spices, gold and silver. There are many interesting things attached to the Cabo history, many explorers of those times found it very hostile for local Indian population. Due to lack of shipping harbors in the town, the actual trade harbors were located in San Jose Del Cabo, about 18 miles north of Cabo San Lucas.
Since pirates from Russia, England and Holland were destroying the Spanish cargo ships, the Spanish decided to go to Baja California Peninsula over other countries and resettle the Indian population to protect its interests. In 1734, the Indians rebelled against church priest. After the American-Mexican War of 1848-1850, Americans returned Baja California Peninsula back to Mexico. Shortly after World War II, wealthy Americans began to come here to spend their vacations and then it was known as Cabo San Lucas. Now there are many luxurious villas, hotels, shopping malls and many man made amenities to attract tourists from all over the world. So Cabo history is full of interesting things that everybody would like to know and knowing it in the pristine locales of Cabo makes the entire experience worth remembering and experiencing.
